Giving students a positive exposure to the construction industry at an early age is the goal of Build Up!, a program jointly developed by the AGC of America and Scholastic, Inc. Through hands-on activities, team projects, and individual work, fifth-grade students meet academic requirements in math, science, history and the language arts while learning about the construction industry. A single kit provides enough instructional materials for 30 students, including a workbook, a video on bridges and a book on building skyscrapers. Hands-on activities encourage students to work in teams to build the strongest bridge and tallest skyscraper using simple materials, such as cardboard and popsicle sticks. Each kit contains more than 20 hours of in-classroom instruction, broken down into smaller units, which give users flexibility in choosing how much of each kit to use at a given time.
Partnerships with the Magic House and Urban Futures enabled AGC of St. Louis to introduce the Build Up! program to 911 teachers and over 40,000 students in the St. Louis area. AGC of St. Louis continues to support those schools participating in the program with extra supplies and mentor visits when requests are received.
